Hand Sewn Doll and dress

Who should sit on the little old school desk? A doll in her first day of school dress!

Remember how we all dressed up for the first day of school? Mom had 9 of us girls and she made all of our dresses. I wish now that I had a picture of every one of them. We would look in the Sears and Roebuck Catalog, find the dress we wanted, and she would cut it out, WITHOUT a pattern.

So, when all the girls are grown and gone, who is left to sew for? Little dolls, teddy bears, and anything else that needed clothes - never with a pattern.

What a beautiful talent she had.

What amazing talent your mother had! Your post brought back memories for me. My mom made all my school clothes, but I'm pretty sure she used a pattern. We didn't take photos on the first day of school either, but when I look at the old family photos I can see her handiwork and remember them. When I was 8 or 9 I had a poodle skirt, and that's the only store-bought outfit I remember having until I was in junior high. I wish I still had that skirt! I sewed dresses for my girls too, but I definitely had a pattern. I admire your mother for her ability to look at a photo and duplicate a dress from that. She also had to make a different size for all of you. Wow is all I can say!

My mom never used a pattern either. She just looked in a fashion magazine and then made the item for me. I was always in the top of fashion when the other girls who's mothers did not sew, had to wait for the fashion to make it's way from the coast into ready-to-wear.

My Mom made a lot of my clothes too. She made the dress I wore the first day of Kindergarten. My sisters wore it too. When my middle daughter, Hannah, started Kindergarten, we dug out that dress. Hannah wore the same dress to her first day of school that I did! It was actually back in style too! :)
